People with good social skills, i need advice....?

i just moved into this town in central valley california where i noticed people start to act weird when i talk about what i just got or what i paid for. for example this one conversation i had with some girl from Tennessee was about how the cost of living in the east coast was high, so i mentioned how some people in my town was paying $500,000 on their mortgage a month, etc. etc. she and some locals looked offended when i said that. Also, there was this one time when i mentioned how i got a 60 dollar haircut to somebody and they got offended about it as well. Why is that? Is it socially unacceptable?People with good social skills, i need advice....?
Im dont live in the states but from what i have noticed is that most people dont talk about numbers, they usally say i make enough, it cost alot, it was cheap i got a good deal... etc But what i would say is so what you be you and you will attrack like minded people. I woked in retial and someone asked how much my jeans were and i told them $325 because we offer them for sale. The mother flipped saying why in the hell would someone pay that much for jeans.... o well i still where those jeans and i got them in 2004 so they lasted longer then $80 pair, but you can expect everyone to have the same POV as yourself. if it really bug u then next time say, my hair cuts are pretty expensive dont use number unless i guess they ask and your ok saying the pricePeople with good social skills, i need advice....?
I think it just depends on HOW you say it.

People rarely ever take what you said into account, it's all in the tone of your voice and body language. If it seemed like you were gloating about it then they probably were uncomfortable.

A lot of the time people don't necessarily like to talk about money, I guess it's just one of those things, just like religion and weight lol.
It just sounds kind of snobbish I guess if they are not used to spending that kind of money and they may think you are bragging about paying that kind of money. Just watch what you say about money around them if they think it is weird.
